There are many reasons why a woman may choose to shave her head, but recently a huge number of women have taken the chop. They include anyone from celebrities to the women using the trending hashtag #girlswithshavedheads. Of course, this is not something completely new, as we have watched some great heroines go bald, from G.I Jane (Demi Moore) to Black Panther’s Okoye (Danai Gurira).
At Bright Side we have taken a look at why women are making such a drastic change to their appearance.
It can be empowering.
To be able to stand out from the crowd can be a confidence booster, especially if it’s for having a striking buzz cut. Although several iconic stars have taken the cut, it can still be considered something big. Even if shaving off your hair isn’t meant to be a statement, it is still a bold move.
It goes against beauty stereotypes.
Despite beauty coming in all forms and colors, society still has certain beauty standards when it comes to women, that are emphasized by the media’s focus on women’s hair and beauty products.
Many women have found that they have been able to step outside of these stereotypes by simply shaving their heads, and they rock it! It is such a head-turner that many celebrities and famous movie characters have used this look to create strong female protagonists.
Their hair can be donated.
Shaving off your hair can be a fantastic way to raise money for a charity, no matter its length. This hair can also be donated to certain charities for medical wigs, such as for those living with alopecia and other health conditions.
It improves the hair’s health.
One reason why women shave off their hair is to help healthier hair to regrow. This is for women who want new fresh hair, especially if they have frazzled their hair after years of intense dying and heat treatments.
It’s a hassle-free haircut.
This hair cut is considerably lower on the hair maintenance chart compared to other styles. This is perfect for the women who do not want to follow a time-consuming hair care routine. It is an easy fix because they can decide how much work to put in, as well as the bonus that it can mean fewer trips to the salon, leaving them with more money in the bank.
There is no reason to not try, it will grow back.
Taking the plunge can seem daunting to many women, it may even seem like a risk. Perhaps you are worried you won’t be taken seriously at work or that you will be considered too ’masculine’ and lose your femininity.
At the end of the day, whether you want to shake up your look a bit or make a social stand, it is just hair and there is no harm in trying.
Many powerful women have successfully pulled off the look throughout the years.
